RentPrep has partnered with the City of Cedar Rapids and their Police Department to provide tenant background checks as part of a program to help landlords make better rental decisions.

RentPrep is the tenant screening solution for Fidelis Screening Solutions and has served over 10,000 landlords and property management companies since 2007.

The City program is called SAFE-CR, or Secure and Friendly Environment for Cedar Rapids, and requires Landlord Business Permit Holders to conduct a background check on all adults who newly occupy a rental unit. “We believe that by working with Fidelis Screening Solutions and their RentPrep solution we are empowering the landlords and property owners in our community to better screen prospective tenant’s background and history. It gives the landlord more information and an opportunity to make good decisions that affect their properties,” says Captain Steve O’Konek of the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

RentPrep has been fully integrated with the Cedar Rapids Police Department and allows seamless communication between the RentPrep FCRA Certified Screeners and City Background Check Technicians. The Screeners at RentPrep provide the national criminal records and information from the National Sex Offender Registry, while the City provides local arrest records as well as indications of any active warrants. The report that is generated as a result of the two sources of information working together is extremely comprehensive and accurate.

Stephen White, CEO of Fidelis Screening Solutions says, “What makes this program so unique from other municipal nuisance abatement ordinances is the great lengths that Captain O’Konek and the City have taken to not only negotiate the best pricing for landlords, but to create an extremely sophisticated system of communication to provide their local landlords with easy access to comprehensive data. The local landlords and citizens should be proud of the effort put forth into making their community a safer place.”

The partnership between the City and Fidelis Screening Solutions began in early 2013 and has gone through months of development before officially launching October 1, 2013.
