A 25-year-old labourer was murdered by his tenant following a quarrel at Vettaikaranpudur on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday. Police arrested the accused on Thursday and remanded him to judicial custody.
The deceased has been identified as S Sabarinathan, from Muthuvinayagar street at Vettaikaranpudur near Anaimalai. The arrested person has been identified as B Selvaraj, 34, from Vettaikaranpudur.
Police said, Selvaraj was staying along with his family in a rented house belonging to Sabarinathan since 2013. He was engaged in agricultural work and was an alcoholic who often quarreled with his family.
He had stopped paying rent for the past three months. Sabarinathan occasionally visited Selvaraj at his residence to persuade him to pay the rent. After repeated attempts, Sabarinathan fixed a deadline of January 28 for Selvaraj to pay pending dues.
On Wednesday, Sabarinathan had gone to Selvaraj’s house and told him to pay the rent immediately or vacate. A quarrel erupted during which Selvaraj fatally stabbed Sabarinathan in his chest and fled. Sabarinathan who sustained deep stab injuries died on the spot.
On Thursday morning, the police arrested Selvaraj and seized the knife from him. Later, he was remanded to judicial custody.
