A 21-year-old who had moved in as tenant, a fortnight ago, was arrested by the police for allegedly trying to rob her elderly landlord last night.
Police said Jothi, from Thiruvarur, had moved into the house of Backiyam (67), of Vijayaraghavapuram Fourth Street, who is staying alone in her ground floor house.
Police said Jothi was in dire financial straits having been unable to find a regular job. Jothi learning that Backiyam was wealthy, had ready-cash on hand all the time and has the habit of keeping her door open at night, decided to rob her. Gaining entry into the house, Jothi was going through the contents in Backiyam’s almirah when Backiyam was woken up by the noise. Police said Jothi hid herself inside the bathroom, and when Backiyam tried to force open the door, she sprayed chilli powder that she had kept ready in case of emergency. Jothi then rushed back to her room and pretended to be asleep.
Backiyam was able to catch a glimpse of the dress the woman thief was wearing. Jothi was picked up and confessed during interrogation, police added.
